Townhouse Vestibule Additions

Improvements to The Townhouse Apartments

Fitchburg State University

Fitchburg, MA

This project began with a comprehensive evaluation of existing site and building conditions at Fitchburg State University's Townhouse Apartments, which were found to be requiring numerous upgrades, including complete window replacement, repairs to exposed stairwells, modifications to existing entrances and walkways to meet current standards for safety and accessibility, miscellaneous lighting and fire protection upgrades, and a general revitalization of campus grounds in the vicinity of the 7 student-residence buildings and single commons building.  The design team proposed a replicable entry vestibule addition, adaptable to each building, serving the repaired and now-enclosed stairwells, along with all new walkways, landscaping and lighting throughout the adjacent site.  The work was carefully planned to allow for uninterrupted use of the buildings by students during the school year, with the construction scheduled during the quieter summer months.  The successful completion of the project has helped Fitchburg State University realize its goal of creating a more functional, comfortable and lively campus living environment for students.
