Central Square Theater
Cambridge, MA
Two long-established local repertory theaters, The Underground Railway Theater and The Nora Theatre Company, formed a unique collaboration with MIT and brought to life a long held vision of introducing live theater to the Square through the welcomed construction of the Central Square Theater.
A small public space serves as the entry court to the Theater, and a modern transparent structure is set back from reconstructed historic Federal Period facades facing Massachusetts Avenue and the open space. The new 30,550 SF structure includes the Central Square Theater on the second and third levels, retail use at the street, and office space behind the historic facades overlooking Massachusetts Avenue. Eleven years in the making, it is the fruit of a collaboration between MIT, the City of Cambridge, PRA and the repertory theaters.
